What is Bowenwork?
Bowenwork/Bowen
Therapy is a profound, yet gentle, healing modality that was developed in Australia, by Tom Bowen. The
actual origins of his concepts are unknown or at least
unclear though there do appear to be relationships to a
variety of modalities, including osteopathy and
traditional Chinese medicine. However, at some point he
recognized an apparent common relationship in many
seemingly unrelated painful conditions, particularly
musculoskeletal but including neurological and other
health problems. He identified this causal link as being
the soft tissue or fascia that envelops the whole body
from head to toe.
Bowenwork is a gentle modality that
uses light, rolling movements over muscles and other
connective tissues that instruct the nervous
system to relax the body. There are pauses of several
minutes between many of these moves, during which the
body responds to and integrates the signals it has just
received. The goal of this process is to relax and bring
the body into balance, which will allow the body to then
begin it's own healing processes. The signals generated
during a session can bring about deep, healing responses
on many levels - physically, energetically, mentally and
spiritually. Many times a client with a recent injury or
ailment (i.e., headache) will have an immediate response
to the work, while others will notice changes and
improvements over the next few hours and days, with even
further improvement at the next appointment.
Often, clients come to Bowenwork as a last resort.
They've tried pain relievers, muscle relaxers, physical
therapy, etc... but have not had lasting relief and so
they come in as a last desperate attempt to relieve
their pain.
When you
come for your first Bowenwork session, we will actually
set up a necessary second session a week later. The
first session gets the ball rolling, so to speak, while
the second session "sets" the work, as well as continues
the healing process (giving the nervous system another
little "nudge"). I can work on one or two clients at the
same time, but you will usually be in different rooms.
Adults may bring one immediate family member with
them for no additional charge if they come at the same
time (spouse or child 18 or under), but you must check
with me first to verify that I do have both rooms
available.
What
can I expect?
The client lays upon a table, much like in a massage. If
undressed, the client will be covered at all times with
appropriate draping material, and only the area being
worked on will be uncovered. The work can also be done
while the client is dressed in most cases, although it
is strongly recommended that the client wear thin, loose
fitting material. It is nearly impossible to work
through jeans and a heavy sweater.
Using gentle touch, a practitioner makes precise
movements over various muscles and tendons throughout
the body, sometimes only one or two moves at a time. The
therapist then leaves the room for several minutes to
allow the brain to integrate the information it has
received, and then will return to make a few more moves.
The moves create a resetting of the body’s various
systems for the purpose of bringing the body into
balance, thereby promoting healing and well-being. The
body can use the energetic signals facilitated during a
session to elicit deep, healing responses within the
body on many different levels - mind, body and spirit.
Some clients go into a very deep state of relaxation
(many state it is much more relaxing than massage),
while others report significant pain relief in addition
to the relaxed state.
How much does it cost?
Initial
Visit (includes initial consultation/ROM testing and
cost of second visit): $115 + tax
Subsequent
visits after second visit: $50 + tax
